To remove the adoption credit from your tax return, please follow the steps below:

  • Log into your return and continue it.
  • Click on Federal in the left column
  • Click on Deductions & Credits
  • Click the button beside Adoption Credit
  • You will see "Here's your adoptive child info"
  • Click the trash can icon (See the screenshot below)
  • You will be asked to confirm you want to delete the credit
  • Click Done

I've done that 8 or 9 times, says I don't qualify for the credit and keeps wanting me to fill it out.

It sounds like you have some input in another section that is generating the credit input.

If you have a W-2 Form, review Box 12 and see if there is a code T listed.  Code T is used by employers to report "Employer-provided adoption benefits."

These are reimbursements from your employer that are not taxable but also cannot be used as credits as well.

If you see this code, you should contact your employer as your W-2 would need to be corrected.

Try this.

You can delete any input in the Federal section of the program.

  1. Select Deductions & Credits
  2. Scroll down to All Tax Breaks and select You and Your Family
  3. Select Adoption Credit
  4. The next screen will be titled Here's your adoptive child info.  Select the trash can to the right of any input here.
