How to file dependent on W4

My husband and I file jointly on our taxes. My husband has claimed our 1 child on his W4 as he has the larger income. Is this the best way to go about it? Should he claim any future children on his W4 as well or should I?

The IRS revised the Form W-4 to remove allowances for dependents.  It now includes steps to account for dependents, other income, and deductions directly.  If your husband earns most of the income, it does make sense for him to account for your dependents on his W-4.

Since you both apparently work, you might want to use the Tax Withholding Estimator on the IRS website to help you determine what you and your husband should each reflect on your Forms W-4 to avoid an underpayment.
