How do I remove the Disaster Tax Relief check box?

I was think that it was the economic impact payment and now that I'm at the smart check, it won't let me remove it.

To access the screen Did you take a disaster distribution at any time between 2018 and 2020? in TurboTax Online follow these steps.

  • Go to Federal / Wages & Income / Your income.
  • Scroll down and click on Wrap up income.
  • Answer Yes or No.

I found an issue where the Disaster Distribution prevents e-filing. The problem is causes by TurboTax *asking the same question twice*. You have to answer "yes" to the first one and "no" to the second:

1. Go to "Wages & Income"
2. Scroll down to "Retirement Plans and Social Security
3. Open "IRA, 401(K) Pension Plan Withdrawals(1099-R)"
4. Select "Continue" (you don't need to add any income forms)
5. Question: "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?"
6. Answer: "Yes"
7. Question: "Did either of you take a disaster distribution at any time between 2018 and 2022?"
8. Answer: "No"

You should be able to e-file after anwering the two disaster distribution questions in this manner.

Even when I follow these steps, the review page still reads that the box is checked, preventing me from filing my taxes. This has to be a program error.

Yes, there is a way to do so. However as of the other day, TurboTax noticed some customers experiencing the same situation. A resolution is coming out soon.

I’m having the same issue. If Intuit could reimburse us we could just scrap it all and start over.

After blowing out my brains and getting a hernia, I finally found the solution. If you have the CD/ download version you can edit forms by clicking the top right forms. From here you’re going to want to delete those red ! marked forms connected to the disaster tax relief. It should be 2 forms under federal information worksheet/ info wks. There is also a 1099R that you should delete if you do not have the form. Now go to info wks right click on the disaster tax relief and select override. Now you can remove the X. I hope this will help some of you I almost remodeled my entire home after searching and trying everything to get rid of the entry.
