First of all, you need to know if you live in one of the following states.  If you do not, then don't worry about finding your car's registration fee because it won't be tax deductible in any event.

  • Alabama
    Arizona
    Arkansas
    California
    Colorado
    Georgia
    Iowa
    Indiana
    Kentucky
    Louisiana
    Massachusetts
    Michigan
    Minnesota
    Mississippi
    Missouri
    Montana
    Nebraska
    Nevada
    New Hampshire
    South Carolina
    Washington
    Wyoming

That said, if you are a resident of one of these states, then you may be able to deduct certain taxes on your federal return for the fees you pay for your vehicle registration or vehicle license.  You will typically find this information on your vehicle registration bill that you receive annually (or bi-annually) from your state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

The total amount of your registration fee is not deductible, just the portion that the state charged you for taxes based on the value of your vehicle.  If you need help physically finding this number on your bill, the best advice is to contact your state's local Department of Motor Vehicles office.  In lieu of that, you might try typing in your state (name) and registration fee as a lookup phrase in Google or other internet browser.  For example, "Alabama vehicle registration fee" and see if you get any helpful returns, or even better an internet image or photograph, that would indicate where you should look on your own state's form.

Unfortunately, as each state is different, there is no one-size-fits-all answer as to where to physically look for the number, other than to say that it will be on the statement (invoice) somewhere.
