How do I know if I took a standard or itemized deduction? I have a schedule a form in my taxes. Does this automatically mean I took itemized deductions?

Yes, if you have a Schedule A, you have itemized deductions.  

And....look at your Form 1040.   What do you see on line 12?

The standard deduction makes some of your income “tax free.”  It is not a refund.  You will see your standard or itemized deduction amount on line 12 of your 2024 Form 1040.

SINGLE $14,600    (65 or older/legally blind + $1950)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY            $14,600    (65 or older/legally blind + $1550)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $29,200    (65 or older/legally blind + $1550)

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $21,900    (65 or older/legally blind + $1950)

 

My line 12 says 14600. I’m married filing separately. I also always clicked I wanted the standard deduction when it let me. That’s why I’m confused at why I have a schedule a sheet.

That is the 2024 Standard Deduction for Married Filing Separately

$14,600 is the 2024 standard deduction for filing Single or Married Filing Separately.    If you are filing married filing separately, you have some extra rules to follow.   You and your spouse have to file the same way.   If one spouse uses itemized deductions the other spouse must also itemize.   Or both spouses have to use standard deduction.   It cannot be one of each.
