How do I get to the Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act screen to update my total? It does not come up again when I select standard deduction.

It came up once and now I cannot find it again to update the amount.

Please follow the steps below to enter your charitable contribution in the correct place in TurboTax :

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click on the Federal Taxes tab.
  3. Click Deductions &Credits.
  4. Click on I'll choose what I work on.
  5. Scroll down and click the Done with Deductions button.
  6. Continue until you reach the Get a tax break for donating cash to charity screen.
  7. Enter your charitable cash contributions.

Hmmm. Thanks for your reply. I don’t see Choose what I work on. I see “Your Tax Breaks” and then the many options to show more, edit, revisit. At the bottom it says Wrap up tax breaks and does not give me the option to enter charitable donations again like the first time I did this.

If your tax return qualifies for the standard deduction, you should see a screen to enter the deduction.

Federal 1040 line 12b Charitable Cash Contributions under CARES Act can be entered or removed at either:

  • Federal Taxes / Deductions & Credits / I'll Choose What I Want To Work On / Charitable Donations / Donations to Charity in 2021, or
  • at the screen Charitable Cash Contributions under CARES Act immediately following Based on what you just told us, the Standard Deduction is best for you.

But the second entry appears to produce better results.

  • Remove the entry at Donations to Charity in 2021 by deleting the entry.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Wrap up tax breaks.
  • You will see the screen Based on what you just told us, the Standard Deduction is best for you.
  • At the screen titled Charitable Cash Contributions under the CARES Act, make sure that the box contains the amount of the deduction for which you qualify.
  • At Other Tax Situations, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Let’s keep going.
  • Continue through Review.

Go to Tax Tools / Tools / View Tax Summary / Preview my 1040 to view line 12b for the charitable deduction.

Yes! Removing the Donations to Charity brought the cares act up again in “wrap up tax breaks” - thank you!
