I'm getting stuck on Line 12 B on form 8889T

When you have contributions into or take distributions from an HSA (Health Savings Account), then the IRS requires you to file form 8889. TurboTax fills in form 8889 based on your entries in the HSA interview. You get to the HSA interview by doing a Search (upper right) for "hsa" (lower case and without the double quotes), and jumping to it.

Because you have a code W in box 12 of your W-2, your employer believes you have an HSA (your employer probably helped you set it up).

The 1099-SA is a form you received from the HSA custodian that shows the amount of distributions you paid out of the HSA. You enter the 1099-SA in the HSA interview. The 5498-SA is an informational form that you just put in your tax file - you don't need it for your tax return.

It sounds like you are in the federal Review when you are getting stuck on line 12B on the 8889.

Line 12B contains the amount of excess HSA contributions that you told TurboTax that you would withdraw before the due date of the return.

It is not clear to me from your question what exactly the issue is, whether TurboTax wants you to enter an amount there or doesn't want an amount there. Remember that we at AnswerXchange cannot see your tax return nor the screen that you are on, so it is critical that when you report a problem, that you at the least give us the actual error message.

This value (the excess withdrawn) is one of those variables in TurboTax that has the annoying habit of hanging around even after you have made changes that should have caused it to go away. This could cause difficulties in the federal Rview. So I recommend to you that you delete your HSA information and start over (because it is very difficult to make this entry go away any other way).

Please do the following:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen

*** Desktop***

3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview.

I don't have a W in box 12, but I can't bypass this form, as I have never had an HSA. Help!

I tried putting what I had from box 12 (w), but it would not accept it. The money from my HSA went to my doctors to pay my medical bills. I had thousands of dollars that I needed to pay.

Are you asking about box 12 on the W-2 or line 12 on the 8889 in the Review (you seem to have asked about both)?

"I tried putting what I had from box 12 (w), but it would not accept it." - what does "but it would not accept it." mean? Did it give you an error message? If so, was it in the HSA interview or during the Review? What was the exact message?

Line 12b on the 8889 is the excess amount of contributions withdrawn after the end of the year.

The issue with this field is that if on the first pass, TurboTax says that you had X in excess contributions and you agreed to withdraw Y before the due date (i.e., after the end of the year), then even when you change things on the second pass so that there is no longer an excess, this number in 12b gets "stuck".

If this field is giving you trouble, the best thing to do is to delete all HSA data and re-enter it from scratch - there is no way to get rid of that number (if it is now incorrect) otherwise.

To delete the HSA data, please do the following:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)

I had another question. this was in reference to the 1099R on the state page it was it has multiple entries of the same number but I have only entered it once. how can i fix that?

Is that state Indiana? There have been some reports, but they are not confirmed and I don't know of a workaround (if needed).

What I would do, because this is cheap and easy is to find the 1099-R(s), delete them and re-add them, and see if this ameliorates the situation. Just make sure that you have copies of the 1099-Rs before you delete them.

Are you reporting Employer contributions made to your HSA on line 9?  This number is also likely to be the number in box 12 code 'W' on your W-2.

This TurboTax Help states:

Code W in Box 12 of your W2 indicates that you have an employer-sponsored Health Savings Account and that there was money deposited into your HSA through the payroll system at work. Code W opens up Form 8889, Health Savings Accounts, on your tax return.

Are you reporting Qualified HSA funding distributions on line 10?

Are you using a Desktop version and entering a number through the Forms option?  Please clarify.

I'm running into the same issue too. I can't move past this form.

IRS form 8889 may have been generated in your tax return by a code W in box 12 of your W-2.  Code W reports company contributions (including employee contributions through a cafeteria plan) to an employee's health savings account (HSA).  This form is used to report HSA contributions, distributions and withdrawals to the IRS.

What error messages are you receiving that will not allow you to move beyond this form?  Please clarify.

You are required to answer the questions about your HSA transactions.  Are your answers making the HSA transactions taxable income?

I can't get passed this screen for the HSA 8889-T. The lines are already filled in

so, I'm not sure what it's asking of me.

"I can't get passed this screen for the HSA 8889-T"

Are you in the Review? What is the message? What is the context of this question?

I'm working on my daughter's tax return.  Her employer has an employer funded HSA that is showing on her W2.  She did not use those funds yet.  She is filing a 1040 as a SINGLE filer but she cannot claim herself as a dependent yet.  She is a dependent on my tax return. Turbotax generated a 8889-T form for her even though the software says she is ineligible to qualify for the HSA deduction as someone else claims her as a dependent.  How do I delete form 8889-T, so I can file her return?  The TT review features keep taking me back to that form. Help please!
