How do I deduct job supplies from my return? I'm a (W-2) Dog groomer. I've kept my receipts.

I'm a dog groomer (W-2), and I have many receipts from buying supplies. How do I add this to my tax deduction?

Since you are an employee and receive a W-2 then your employee business expenses are not deductible on a federal tax return due to the tax code changes in effect for tax years 2018 thru 2025.

Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.

Work related expenses for regular employees are not tax deductible. The program still allows you to enter them, because they may be deductible in some states if you itemize your deductions. There is a section on the deductions and credits page for work related expenses.

your employer may reimburse you for work related expenses tax free. If they don’t, I would stop buying work related supplies with your own money. Additionally, in some states it may be illegal for your employer to require you to pay out-of-pocket for necessary working expenses, especially if the effect of buying those supplies reduces your income below the minimum wage. You should check with your state labor laws on the rules for employers that require employees to pay for necessary expenses.
