How can I edit the amount I previously entered for my medical expenses? The program keeps showing me my Medical Expense Deduction without allowing me to edit the figure.

I have not yet filed, but the program won't seem to allow me to change the figure I previously entered.

Edit and update medical expenses at

  • Federal / Deductions & Credits / Your tax breaks / Medical / Medical Expenses.
  • Click Start / Edit / Add to the right.
  • Each screen will ask you about a specific medical expense.

See this TurboTax Help.

However, if you need to edit Medical Insurance Premium that were reported on another form (such as an SSA-1099), go to that form.

I am having the same issue - when trying to edit/add medical expenses I keep getting a screen that says "Thanks we got all your Medical Expense info" and a "Done" button.  There is no other button.  I am using TurboTax Online Premier, thanks.

In your situation, it is recommended that you first log out of your TurboTax Online and delete your cookies.

On rare occasions, they may make your browser think you already did something that you still need to do. To fix that, you'll need to delete (clear) the cookies from your browser. For more information on how to delete your cookies on the browser you are using, please see How do I delete cookies?.

You can also try using a different browser to complete your tax return.

After that is complete, please enter your medical expenses by following the steps below:

  1. With your return open, search for Schedule A and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  2. Enter your medical expenses, starting with prescriptions, on the following screens.

Thanks LenaH, however that did not work either.  I ended up using the Tax Tools to delete the form (Schedule A) and start over.  It was annoying to have to do that, but that was the only way to enter the edits.

Yup, using the Tax Tools to delete the relevant worksheet was the only thing that eventually worked for me too. 🙂

I'm using TurboTax deluxe. When i try to update my medical expenses, TurboTax says Right now, the standard deduction saves you the most on taxes.  It gives me no option to add my deductions.

Please clarify if you need to enter your medical expenses or edit what you have already entered. Are you able to access Deductions and Credits to review other deduction topics?

Of course, but that way is not working. Doesnt give the option to review/edit.

Since you are having issues editing the Medical Expenses in Schedule A, try deleting this section using the Tools feature.

  1. Log in and click take me to my return (unless already in).
  2. Click Tax Tools from the left-side menu.
  3. Select Tools from the drop-down menu and delete Schedule A

I also recommend that you first log out of your TurboTax Online and delete your cookies.

I have the same issue with being unable to edit medical expenses.  In addition, part of the monthly enrollment premiums lsited in Part III, column A of the 1095-A were reimbursed through a Healthcare Reimbursement Amount.  I cannot determine where to input the HRA amount, nor Medicare premiums or out of pocket costs I will use the standard deduction for Federal, but this impacts Ohio taxes as well.

Very frustrating.

All the topics related to Medical Expenses are in the Credits  & Deductions section, under 'Medical'.

You can type 'medical expenses' in the Search area, then click on 'jump to medical expenses' to get to this section.  At this point the interview starts with prescriptions, and continues through the other medical topics.  You are entering your out-of-pocket expenses, plus medical mileage.

If you have Medicare premiums shown on your SSA-1099 benefits statement, they are automatically transferred to the medical section when you enter your 1099-SSA income, so you won't need to enter them again.

You will be able to enter the amount of your Healthcare Reimbursement in this section, when you are specifically asked about reimbursements you received.

To Edit your 1095-A, type '1095-A' in the Search area, then 'Jump to 1095-a'.

I was running into this problem on the 2023 Home and Business desktop app. In "step-by-step mode" I was just stuck in a loop of the system not allowing me to edit anything. So I clicked "Forms" in the top right of the screen to enter Forms Mode. You can manually make the entries in Schedule A, and then TurboTax will correctly calculate everything. You can go back to "step-by-step" mode to see your changes there as well.

Definitely a software glitch, but you can get around it!

I struggled with this too!  Finally got an answer that worked:

I was using TurboTax Premium Online

-Go to Tax Tools

-Forms

-Find Medical Expenses Worksheet

-Delete Medical Expenses Worksheet

-Then go back to deductions, then medical expenses

I hope this helps you!

I am about to lose my mind over this issue!! I was on with TurboTax help for more than an hour.  He finally said I would just need to start over with my ENTIRE return!!

I’m not seeing a Forms button on the top right of my screen.

Forms view is available on desktop versions. If you are using TurboTax online, navigate back to the medical section by typing 'medical expenses' in the search field, then select the 'jump to medical expenses' link.

That will take you back to the medical section of Schedule A where you can review your entries.

I suspect that you are using a TurboTax Online version.  The directions referring to FORMS is found in the TurboTax Desktop version.

Follow these steps in TurboTax Online, to return to entering Medical Expenses.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Down the left side of the screen click on Deductions & credits.
  • Scroll down to Medical, click the down arrow to the right.
  • Click Start/Revisit to the right of Medical Expenses.
