How can I change the answer to "At any time during 2019, did you receive, sell, send, exchange or otherwise acquire any financial interest in any virtual currency"

Turbot tax asked

"At any time during 2019, did you receive, sell, send, exchange or otherwise acquire any financial interest in any virtual currency"

I entered a wrong answer. How can I go back to change my answer in the UI again? The question doesn't pop up any more.

Use the following steps to revisit the cryptocurrency question and change your response:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “cryptocurrency” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to cryptocurrency
  • Click on the blue “Jump to cryptocurrency” link and enter your information

I followed your instruction but I did not see "Jump to cryptocurrency" option after I did the first two steps.

There are 22 pages of search results, I look through all of them but none of them is "Jump to cryptocurrency".

To revisit the Cryptocurrency section:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Go to Wages and Income
  3. Scroll down to Investment Income and click show more.
  4. Go to Cryptocurrency and click Start.

None of the earlier answers worked for me.  No "jump to crypto" option, etc.  To revisit that virtual currency question, tried to go to Forms mode and found the question at top of Schedule 1, but it was not editable there.  FINALLY was able to edit that question in Forms mode by going to "1040/1040SR Wks" worksheet, scrolling down until reached the top of schedule 1, and it was editable there.  Huge amount of time spent to find this backdoor method...

Thank you for posting this. It was frustrating not being able to edit it in Schedule 1 also. I was hunting for that setting for 2 hours as well. I was trying to hunt for that question in the regular UI but it's gone after I answered "No"

Thanks for posting this. I had a similar problem while doing my 2020 taxes. I am using TT Premier desktop version.  Once I answered the crypto q in the interview, I spent a lot of time to find a way to change it. Till I found your post. Just to update - the 2020 Turbo Tax one has to go to Forms. Then in left panel go to 1040/1040SR Wks. Change it over their. Cheers!

This is the only correct answer. All the others were dead ends. Thanks for posting!

It's ridiculous that Intuit makes this so difficult.

I tried going through this for the 2020 return question. But even when I select "no", the box on the tax return is marked "yes". I am using Turbo Tax online and do know how to access the forms directly.

@mattloflin

you are not following the workaround EXACTLY and going to a place which looks simmilar but is NOT same.

In left panel go to 1040/1040SR Wks

I have tried all the steps above and still cannot find the question.  I went to forms and selected 1040/1040SR wks from the left panel, scrolled down to the top of Schedule 1.  The question is not there! Schedule 1 starts with Part 1 Additional Income.  The question is not in Part 1 of Schedule on my form.  I checked everywhere on Schedule 1 and could not find it.  Is there any other way to find this question?  Am I missing something?  Very frustrating and turbotax needs to fix this!

Go to Forms. From Left panel click on 1040/1040SR Wks

Then in right panel scroll down to crypyo question and changes answer Yes/No whatever applies to you.

It looks like you are in Forms Mode.  You can just click the No box.

What if I used online version? Forms Mode is not supported. How can I make the change?

I am needing to know how to amend a tax return to change the question regarding this from yes to no. I have gone through every section of the amended areas and cannot seem to find where this is to fix. Thank you.

While buying and holding crypto doesn’t require a yes, you need to check that box if you sold, exchanged, mined digital assets, or used them for purchases.

After you finish entering details of income click on Wrap up income at the bottom of the page

  • You’re doing awesome = Continue
  • Real experts to help with your taxes = Continue at the bottom
  • Our tax experts are right here if you change your mind = Continue
  • Continue through the interview to this next question.
  • Were either of you affected by a natural disaster in 2021?
    • Yes / No Continue
  • On the next screen it will ask you
  • Did you acquire, sell, or exchange any virtual currency in 2021?
    • Change your answer to Yes/No Continue

I apologize as these questions do not reappear when amending the returns in turbo tax. I have chatted and called, numerous times and unfortunately nobody at turbo tax seems to know where these questions are on the amended taxes. Right after income, it places you right back to page that leads to discounts. Non of the natural disaster questions, or trading crypto reappear. There has to be either a system error or a workaround, any help would be appreciated, thank you!

If you are amending a 2019 tax return, you must be using downloaded software. If that is the case,

  1. Click on the white Forms icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Highlight 1040/1040SR Wks in the column on the left.
  3. Scroll down just a bit and you will see the question below the Presidential Campaign question.
  4. You can change your answer here.
  5. Click on Step-by-Step in the upper right corner to return to the interview.

Hi Julie,

I am sorry I am using the online version of turbo tax this year 2021, and it is not bringing me back to those interview questions following any of the steps above. Thank you for your assistance.

If you have already filed, you do not need to amend your return over the question as it does not affect your tax liability. If you have not yet filed:

  1. return to the income section,
  2. scroll to the very bottom and select done with income.
  3. Did you own or control foreign bank account...yes or no
  4. continue
  5. Disaster distribution? no
  6. continue
  7. Virtual currency question!!

Here are the screenshots to walk you through.

@Jennjenn86

I struggled with the same issue you had and follow the steps recommended, but still the question wasn't showing up after the disaster fund as shown.

I have only crypto interested reported with 1099-MISC, so I had no entries for cryptocurrency sales on Schedule D.

But I found a workaround to this:

- add a dummy crypto transaction, entered manually (you can make up the cost basis and dates, since you'll delete it later)

- now go through the wrap up income once again, the cryptocurrency question should now appear, select the correct choice

- go back to the income section and delete the dummy entry

- repeat the wrap up income once again

- to double check, go to Tools->Print center and see the return preview, you should now see a different box checked on the 1040 form

I think there's a bug in the software that doesn't trigger the question to reappear when wrapping up the income again. But changing a condition, e.g. adding a dummy crypto transaction if it was not there before, would trigger the question again.

It took me days to figure this out, so hopefully this might be helpful to someone else!

Another option is to follow these steps:

  1. go to the Wages & Income section (in desktop) or Income & Expenses (in Online) and
  2. scroll all the way to the bottom of the income type list.
  3. You will either click on Wrap up Income (Online version) or Done with Income (desktop).
  4. This action generates the income finalizing questions, including questions regarding natural disasters, foreign assets, and the virtual currency question.
  5. When you get to the cryptocurrency question, make the appropriate change.

Hi @GeorgeM777,

That's exactly what I was referring to on the last part of my message. I tried multiple times to Wrap Up Income, but the cyptocurrency question was NOT coming up again.

But after entering dummy crypto transactions it triggered the question to show up.

I'd say this is a bug with the online version that requires this workaround, at least it did for me.
