The veterans and surviving spouses property tax credit is a credit equal to the amount of property taxes paid during the year on an eligible veteran's or surviving spouse's principal dwelling. The credit is claimed on the Wisconsin income tax return. Before claiming the credit, the veteran or surviving spouse must obtain verification of his or her eligibility for the credit from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA). A copy of this verification must be attached to the Wisconsin income tax return for the first year that the credit is claimed.

To claim the credit :

  1. Open your tax return.
  2. Select State taxes.
  3. Select Edit next to Wisconsin.
  4. Continue until you get to the screen Take a look at Wisconsin credits and taxes
  5. Scroll down to Other Credits and click Start next to Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit.

Please check the link below for requirements to qualify for the credit:

TurboTax should adjust your School Property Tax Credit after you enter the Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit.

Go back to Take a look at Wisconsin credits and taxes. See if you can edit the section to remove your property tax.

If you can't, go back to the Veteran's credit and remove your information. Then go back to the School Tax remove your property tax. Return to the Veteran's credit and fill that out again.
