Your standard deduction lowers your taxable income.  It is not a refund.

2019 Standard Deduction Amounts

Single $12,200   (+ $1650 65 or older)

Married Filing Separate  $12,200   (+ $1300 if 65 or older)

Married Filing Jointly $24,400   (+ $1300 for each spouse 65 or older)

Head of Household $18,350  (+ $1650 for 65 or older)

Look on line 9 of your 2019 Form 1040 to see your itemized/standard deduction amount

Depending on whether you have filed your tax return or not, please see the steps below to determine if you claimed itemized deductions or took the standard deduction.

If you have not filed your tax return yet:

  1. Log into TurboTax and click on any topic to continue
  2. Click on Federal from the menu on the left-hand side
  3. Click on Deductions & Credits at the top
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "Wrap up tax breaks"
  5. On the next screen, it will indicate whether you took the standard deduction or claimed itemized deductions

If you have already filed your tax return:

  1. Log into TurboTax and click on Tax Home from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
  2. Scroll down and click on "Show" to the right of Your Tax Returns & Documents at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Choose the tax year you want and then select Download PDF
  4. Locate your Form 1040 and compare the amount on Line 9 to the "Standard Deduction" Box on the far right of the page. If the amount listed on line 9 agrees to the Standard Deduction amount for your filing status then you claimed the standard deduction.
