HELOC deduction/home improvements

We have a fairly large HELOC on our home. Calculating the amount used for substantial home improvements is my least favorite part especially since it's existence goes back quite some way.

Is there some way to see what number I used for my 2023 taxes in TurboTax? I can't locate the spreadsheet I used before. It's much faster to just add the couple times I did it this year than start all over.

Second question: I refinanced that HELOC (to get a larger line) in Feb, 2024.   When entering the "older" 1099-INT info, i.e. the one paid off in the refi, (and the amt used for home improvements) do I enter $0 for the balance of that loan on Dec 31, 2024, then take care of whatever used for home improvements against the new loan when I enter the 1099 info for the new/refinance loan?

There should be mortgage interest worksheet included in your prior year's return.  If you didn't print or save a pdf of the entire return, you can access it as follows:

  • Sign in to your account.  Make sure it is the same account you used to prepare last year's return.  There are two ways to get your prior-year returns:
  1. Select Documents from the menu, use the dropdown menu to choose the tax year you want, and select Download tax PDF.
  2. On Tax home, scroll down and select Your tax returns & documents. Select the year you want and select Download/print return (PDF).

For the old HELOC, yes enter zero as the balance as of 12/31/2024.  Home improvements paid for with the new HELOC would only apply to that loan when you are calculating the different amounts of interest to deduct.

It's not in there. The pdf doesn't contain that document, only the Schedule A where it is itemized.

How is there no other way to see this? Why isn't my mortgage interest worksheet even in there?

If you're given a choice when you print your return, be sure to select the option with all calculation worksheets.
