HDHP and HSA Deductions and Questions

I had an HSA account that I contributed $20 every month to starting from January 2016 until October 2016. I answered the question did you have a HDHP and I answered. No, I didn't. But the next page asked me to list what HDHP coverage plan I had for each month (self, family, or none). I am not sure why it's asking me this question when I said I didn't have one. My HSA account was for myself only. Should I click self only from January to October 2016 or should it be none for those months?

It is confusing. You answered correctly (no), that you were not covered by a HDHP as of 12/1/16.

On the Max Contribution page, you would select self-only for the months Jan - Oct, and none for Nov-Dec. and then select the Calculate Max Limit button.

This will calculate your maximum contribution limits for just your covered months. There is a penalty calculated if you were not covered by an HDHP and over contributed to the HSA for the non-covered months. A $20/month contribution should produce no contribution penalties.

See below example.
