filing status of 18 year old with significant earned income

Can a 18 year old High School student who provided more than half of their support with earned income file their taxes independently if their parents do not claim them

Yes. If you provided more than half of your own support, then your parents cannot claim you as a dependent. You can file as a non-dependent.

but be careful how you determine 'support' ; this is the official IRS worksheet. suggest using it to determine that in fact a high school student is supporting more than 50% of his own support as it is quite unusual.
