Entering deductions for medical, RE taxes, etc. & when I click done the number is listed, but to the right it says "update" and the amounts don't appear in deductions.

I think my itemized deductions are more, but the program is just giving me the standard deduction.

TurboTax had a 100% accuracy guarantee so it will give you what benefits you the most on your taxes.  Somethings like medical expenses get reduced by a percentage of your income.

You can go to the Forms mode in the upper right and click on Forms.  Then on the left side you can "open form" and type in Itemized Deductions and click on the Sch A.  It will produce a Sch A and show you what is on it.  If below the standard, it is not part of return that will be filed however.
