Entered mortgage interest does not show up on Schedule A

From the value on Form 1088, I entered our mortgage interest in the step by step. No questions were asked which is the same as all other years. Our mortgage is not above the limit. Zero showed up on the Schedule A line 8. What would have caused this? The zeroed value would make a large difference in my 2018 bottom line.

When TurboTax asked whether the loan is secured by a property of yours, did you answer Yes? If the loan is not secured by a home that you own, the interest is not deductible. A mortgage loan is normally secured by the home that the loan was used to purchase.

If that's not the problem, make sure your TurboTax software is updated. On the Online menu select Check for Updates.

since we can not see your return or the what you entered, you need to contact support.    it does seem strange that no questions in step by step mode were asked.

I am having the exact same issue. I was showing a refund of about $6K all the way through inputting my tax data - then when I went to do state, the federal taxes flipped to show about $7K owed. I had a heart attack and starting going line by line - and saw I now have no mortgage interest deduction on Sch A.  I went back to make sure I had input things correctly and checked the correct boxes - I did - and it's still not working. I am up to date on software - in fact, I installed recent updates right before this happened, so perhaps there's a bug in there. I sure hope I can get this fixed ASAP because I am all set to file for that refund!

I recommend deleting Form 1098 and re-adding it in your system.

Thank you - believe me, we tried that - a couple times. I took both 1098s out and re-entered them, doing a very careful step-be-step with my TurboTax helper to make sure all the right boxes were checked and so forth, and the problem persisted. My TurboTax helper has 9 years in her role and knew the system backwards and forwards - never saw anything like this and agreed with me it’s a software problem.

I’ve been using TurboTax for nearly 20 years  - never had an issue like this.

I'm having exact same  issue. Through Friday 2/14,  federal deduction for mortgage interest was showing. Worked on state return on Saturday 2/15 and now federal deduction for mortgage interest of $24,000 is not applied.   This takes my federal tax bill from $950 to $7,000.   Let's go Turbo Tax please look  into this ASAP

I'm using Turbo Tax Premier, it's updated and state version I'm working on is California. I think there is a bug when you start working on your state return. After I entered my state info, my federal mortgage interest deduction is no longer applied. It's shows in the deduction section but not on summary page where 2018 and 2019 deductions are listed.

Same issue, Turbo TAx expert confirmed there is a bug.  Work around is manually enter mortgage interest paid in forms section ( bring up schedule A , put cursor in box for amount, right click override, that brings up small menu  select override and manually enter amount).  Using forms and not  step by step means you cannot file electronically, you have to printout return and mail it.

More details,  initially I could not enter amount of mortgage interest paid in over ride mode. Had to download Turbo  Tax Individual R -17.  After install and re start able to manually enter amounts.

I was also having the same problem where my mortgage interest was going to 0 on Sch A.  I followed all the steps mentioned (delete and restart) a couple of times, the last time when the refund jumped back up, instead of hitting the continue button, I clicked on the review my return at the top of the screen and the Sch A kept the interest at almost the exact amount that I calculated manually.  There is in my opinion a bug / miscalculation in the Home Premier version I am using

I'm having the same problem but I didn't discover it until after I had efiled.   After I manually add the mortgage interest to Schedule A, will I have to do an amended 1040 and send a hard copy?

I'm having the same issue with Downloaded Premier version, federal and one state(MA).

The mortgage interest alone is close to federal standard deduction, so I'd very much like to have this bug fixed.

There is a workaround for this.

For desktop versions:

  • In Forms view, locate and click on Tax & Int Wks on the left from the forms list
  • On the form, scroll to Mortgage Interest Limited Smart Worksheet
  • Click on NO to the right of the question, Does your mortgage interest need to be limited

For online versions:

  • Under Deductions & Credits, expand the menu for Your Home
  • Click Start/Revisit next to Mortgage Interest and Refinancing (Form 1098)
  • Click through until you get to a screen that says Do any of these situations apply to you? Mark Yes.
  • On the next screen, take out the zero.
  • Click back and choose No.

I am having this problem on March 28.  It looks like TurboTax has not fixed this known problem in over a month!
