Do we need to change our residence to US foreign territory if we lived in Illinois from jan-april and now are stationed in Japan?

Military family, lived in Illinois from Jan-Apr and then PCSed to Japan. Married filing jointly, income for spouse from Jan-Apr.

Your residence is whatever your resident state is.

Your mailing address may be a foreign address.

As a military member, you select your state of residence.

Your spouse has the option of also using your state of residence for filing their different if they desire.

If your state of residence is Illinois, and your spouse earned income in Illinois, you would file a full-year resident state return for Illinois.
