Enter your information in TurboTax and follow the step-by-step guide and it will let you know if you qualify for it or not.. you don't have to do anything special on your part. To get directly to that section click on the Federal Taxes tab > Deductions & Credit > Scroll down to "You and Your Family" and click start/update next to Earn Income Credit.

To qualify for and claim the Earned Income Credit you must: Have earned income; and. Have been a U.S. citizen or resident alien for the entire tax year; and. Have a valid Social Security number (not an ITIN) for yourself, your spouse (if filing jointly), and any qualifying children on your return;

Also, your earned income cannot exceed:

  • $14,880 with no Qualifying Children ($20,430 if married filing jointly)
  • $39,296 with one Qualifying Child ($44,846 if married filing jointly)
  • $44,648 with two Qualifying Children ($50,198 if married filing jointly)
  • $47,955 with three or more Qualifying Children ($53,505 if married filing jointly)

TurboTax handles the behind-the-scenes calculations so you don't have to.

To visit the EIC section, search for EIC in your TurboTax program and then click the "Jump to" link in your search results. However, don't do this until after you've entered all your income and personal information – otherwise you'll get an incorrect EIC calculation.

I'm having problems to understand if I can claim this or not since I moved to Puerto Rico for studying on Aug 2018. I'm working here in Puerto Rico but I still have a house in Georgia which I have it rented and received an income for that house. I reported it on the rentals section but can I claim the EIC since I still own a house un US and my DL is from GA?
