Do I put 0 for adoption expenses on my Wisconsin return?

I am a non-resident of Wisconsin and it is asking me to put information for adoption expenses when I didn't apply for that.

Wisconsin state law allows a deduction from AGI under the individual income tax for adoption fees, court costs, or legal fees relating to the adoption of a child, for whom a final order of adoption has been entered in a Wisconsin court during the taxable year. The deduction only is allowed for full-year residents who are adoptive parents.

Review your entries under Personal Information in the Federal section, make sure Adopted is not selected on the screen Tell us about your child.

Also, if you are not claiming any adoption expenses, look for form 8839 and delete it.

  • From the left menu, choose Tax Tools then Tools.
  • Click on Delete a Form from the window that pops up.
  • You should now see the Review Form List. Scroll down the list and click Delete on Form 8839.
