Do I need to file a quitclaim deed? I removed myself from the mortgage of a house I owned. I did not live in the house in 2021 and I did not pay taxes on it.

Extra details:  I co-owned a house with a roomate.  We had a falling out.  I moved out and we used a quitclaim deed to take my name off the mortage.

In this forum, we can only answer tax questions. Quitclaim deeds are legal questions and you should contact a reputable lawyer. You may also ask  the lawyer about your mortgage and real estate tax obligation after a Quitclaim Deed.

  • Contact the mortgage company. You signed the mortgage with them and they generally have to release you from your debt obligation.

Apologies for my ignorance, it was the property as well.
