Do I get a third stimulus check if I wasn't eligible for the first two?

My daughter was 16 at the beginning of 2020 which means I could still claim her as a dependent.

At the end of 2020 and beginning of 2021 she had a job until April. Then she got another job in Oct. 2021.

Anyway, I'm filing her taxes and it asks if she got a third stimulus payment. She didn't so I clicked no, and it adds $1400 to her refund. This doesn't seem right.

Should I click yes because she was still dependent in 2020 and I got $5600 in March 2021 (family of 4 including her)?

Thanks

Scott

You should be claiming her as your dependent on your 2021 tax return.

She should indicate that she is a dependent on her 2021 tax return.  This will remove the question on her return for the 3rd stimulus payment since a dependent is not eligible for the stimulus payment on their tax return.

You will receive the stimulus payment for her on your tax return because she is your dependent.

She isn't still your dependent in 2021?   How old was she on Dec 31?  If she was under 19 you can claim her.

But no, on her return she says NO she did not get the Stimulus payment because you did.  She can get it herself.

Your teenage daughter cannot get a stimulus check.   You can still claim her as a dependent.  Dependents do NOT get stimulus checks.

You can still claim her as a dependent even if she had a job.   You will be able to claim her as a qualified child until she turns 19,or until she turns 24 if she becomes a full-time student.

On your daughter's tax return you have to say in My Info that she can be claimed as someone else's dependent.   If you answer that question correctly then the software will not put that $1400 on her return.

She turned 18 last February (2021) and will be 19 next week.

I'm confused now because Turbo tax and the IRS goes by the age of the child at the end of the year. At the end of 2020 she was 17 and on my 2020 return, Turbo tax removed the child tax credit for her.

But are you saying I'm still claiming her as a dependent? I assume that because her date of birth is in there that Turbo tax is doing the correct thing.

We are saying you can still claim  her as a dependent if she is under 19  or a full time student under 24 OR any age if she made less than 4,300.  That's for anyone all the time.

The third stimulus doesn't go by age now.  You get $1,400 for everyone listed on your return.  And the Child Tax Credit increases the age to under 18.  But you won't get that now since she turned 18 in 2021.

So to wrap up she needs to say YES she can be claimed by someone else (even if you don't claim her).  Go back to My Info and check that box on her return.

Yes, I did that and it removed the $1400 from her refund. I'm glad because I'd hate to have let her get it then tell her she had to pay it back later.

So Turbo tax still puts her on my return as a dependent for 2021 because she was 18 at the end of 2021, even tough they took away the child tax credit?

In her jobs in 2021, she earned a little over $5000.

Yes.  Although you will be eligible to receive the Other Dependent credit of $500 for her.
