Difference in HSA contribution between W2 and HSA Bank 1099

Hi,

My 2024 W2 shows the total amount contributed this year for HSA contributions through payroll and through employer contributions and that comes to 6500. I added my own contribution of 1800 for 2024 taking the total to 8300, which is the limit for 2024.

However, my 1099-SA from HSA shows 8092 dollars. When i checked with HSA they said that the first withdrawal in 2024 was applied for 2023 and hence the total contribution for 2024 is 8092 and not 8300.

When i go to Turbo tax it shows 6500 from HSA and if I add my contribution of 1800, i do get 8300 but that does not match with HSA statement. My employer does not know what to do here because they did contribute/deduct 6500.

How do i take care of this in Turbo tax?

Thanks,

RG

As long as you report the correct amount of contributions for 2024 on your tax return you should be OK. Form 1099-SA reports distributions from your HSA account, so that wouldn't be associated with your contributions. Just maintain records supporting what you contributed in the case of an audit.

Thanks for your reply.

The question is what is correct? And i mistakenly said 1099-SA. What I meant to say was that the HSA site shows me a lower number as compared to my W2.

So should i reporting the W2 number plus my own contribution or the number on the HSA site?

The reply made by @ThomasM125 does not address your situation.

Because the amount reported with code W in box 12 of your 2024 W-2 includes $92 that was contributed for 2023, in the HSA section of TurboTax you must answer Yes to the question that asks "Did your employer tell you about any other contributions?," then indicate $92 as employer and payroll contributions made in 2024 for tax year 2023.

Thanks for your inputs.

The contribution made in 2024 for 2023 was confirmed by HSA bank and not my employer. Does that make a difference?

thanks

"confirmed by HSA bank and not my employer. Does that make a difference?"

No, it doesn't make any difference.  TurboTax just has a strange way of asking for this information by inappropriately implying that the information had to come from your employer.  All TurboTax really want to know is if any part of the amount reported with code W in box 11 was an HSA contribution for the previous tax year.  It doesn't matter how you came to know that.
