If your child is away at college, the IRS considers this a temporary absence. You can indicate that your child lived with you for the whole year in the dependent section.

All of them. Check out the small print on the screen. "If your child was away at college, count the number of months away as having lived with you."

It was my son's first year at college. Since he started in September, it would be 4 month that I select? Or, per your directions, select 'The whole year'?

The time your son is at college counts as time living with you in your home. You will answer that your son lived with you all year when preparing your tax return.
