Can I write off a portion of a real estate commission that I paid back to a customer?

I received my full commission check but then paid a customer some of the proceeds. So I didn't realize the entire amount paid to me. Can I write off the amount I refunded the customer?

You may claim the rebate as an expense only if the full commission is included on your own year-end 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC.
