Can I take the home office deduction if I work at home remotely for a company that does have its own office in another city? I am hired as a full-time remote employee.

If I were to move to the city that their office is in, I would be allowed to work in the office, however, the company's office is 3 hours from where I live.

If you are an employee and receive a W-2 for your income, then employee business expenses, to include a home office, are not deductible on a federal tax return due to the tax code changes for tax year 2018 thru 2025.

The Home Office expense is still available for self-employed persons.

Yes, you can claim the home office deduction if you have a space at home used regularly and exclusively for work.

@noahwatkins

This is an old thread.

For 2018 and beyond, W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expense on a federal return.
