Can I qualify for a break or credit for taking care of my disabled spouse, even though I do not get paid for it?

I do not work because I have to drive my spouse to appointments, and make sure there are no issues (mobility & balance) while at home. I was paid by the VA for a few years, but they changed their guidelines and we no longer qualified for a paid caregiver stipend. I have to attend appointments due to TBI & memory issues. My spouse is not able to drive, so I do all the driving for us and our high school student, making work next to impossible.

If you itemize, you could deduct your mileage for medical appointments, but that is about it.    And even if you did itemize, only the medical expenses you paid over 7.5% of your AGI would be deductible.
