Can I get rid of a tax break that I accidentally clicked on? I have car registration fees popping up in my tax breaks and do not know how to get rid of it.

Yes, follow the steps below if you want to delete the car registration fee:

  • Login to your account.
  • Select Federal from the left menu .
  • Go to Deductions and Credits.
  • Scroll down to Cars and Other Things You Own
  • Select Revisit next to Car Registration Fees
  • Select the trash can icon next to the Vehicle model to delete.

Taxpayers can only deduct the car registration fee that’s based on the vehicle’s value and if they itemize their deductions.

I had followed these directions and there is still a tax break taken out of my tax return. My tax return has went from around $1,600 to $800.

The car registration fees section is found on Schedule A, on the line for "state and local personal property taxes."

Your state might not specifically refer to the fee as a personal property tax.  To remove the car registration fees from your return, navigate to the Schedule A and remove the fees.

You can search for Schedule A from the Federal tab.  Type Schedule A in the search box and Jump to Schedule A.
