Can I get a house exemption if I lives there for 1.5 years and then kept it empty and used some other home as primary residence?

Simple answer: No.  You must both own and live in the house for a full two years.

There are exceptions, most notably if you had to move for employment or health reasons. But, there are also "other unforeseeable circumstances".

Exceptions do not apply to a property not used as a principal residence.

If you moved out early due to one of the qualifying events listed in publication 523, you might qualify for a partial exclusion.  It is not required that you sell immediately to use the partial exclusion.
