Can I enter job related expenses if I work for my state government as a correctional officer?

If you are a W-2 wage employee then your employee business expenses are not deductible on a federal tax return due to the tax code changes in effect for tax years 2018 thru 2025.

No, not if you were an employee.   The job-related expenses deduction is not allowed for w-2 employees in tax years 2018-2025.  It is still available to people who work in one of these specific professions or situations:

  • Armed Forces reservist
  • Qualified performing artist
  • Fee-basis state or local government official (not a corrections officer for a state government)
  • You're disabled and have impairment-related expenses
