If you itemize your personal deductions on Schedule A, then you generally can deduct the portion of medical expenses that are over 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income. Only out of pocket medical expenses qualify and your total itemized deductions must be higher than your 2018 standard deduction to benefit.

Follow the directions below to enter your medical expenses.
- Log in and click take me to my return (unless already in).
- Click Tax Tools from the left-side menu and select Tools from the drop-down menu.
- Click Topic Search, type Medical Expenses and click Go.
- On the next screen, the program will ask "Did you have more than (dollar amount) in medical expenses"? You must answer Yes to enter your medical expenses.
Alternatively, you can type Medical Expenses into the Search box and click the Jump To Medical Expenses link in the search results.
Note: You should not deduct any portion of self-employed health insurance premiums on Schedule A.
