Can I claim property taxes for 2024 if a check was cut from my escrow account prior to end of 2024, but wasn't received by my town until January? It shows on my 1098 form

Yes, you can claim property taxes for 2024 if the check was cut and mailed (post-marked) from your escrow account before the end of 2024, even if it wasn't received by your town until January. Here’s why:

  • Year Paid: The IRS considers property taxes deductible in the year they are paid, not when they are received by the taxing authority.
  • Escrow Payments: When using an escrow account, you should deduct the amount actually paid to the taxing authority, not the amount you deposited into the escrow account.
