Yes, COBRA health and dental premiums you paid are deductible when self-employed as an independent contractor (1099).

The following TurboTax FAQ provides specific information on how to enter these premiums. The same steps will apply for the online version of the program.

If adding the COBRA premiums as a personal medical expense does not result in a Self-employment deduction, enter them in the Business Income and Expenses interview.

So it is OK to throw the COBRA in either the personal medical expenses or the business expenses?

Sorry I think the prior answers are wrong. Self-employed health insurance policies must be in the name of the business. Sole Proprietors can meet this requirement if the policy is in their name. COBRA policies are in the name of the former employer and do not qualify for the self employment health insurance deduction.

If you participate in a Cobra plan through your old employer, you generally cannot deduct your Cobra premiums as self employed business premiums (on Schedule 1) as the plan is in the name of your old employers business. You can deduct them as itemized with any medical deductions on schedule A if in excess of 10% of your AGI.
