Are itemized deductions supposed to be available to the state return even if the program selected standard deduction for federal?

All itemization categories were zeroed out on the deductions and credits summary page on the federal return after it selected the standard deduction.  Standard deduction is best for federal, but I think itemizing will be better for state.  Any way to get the itemized amounts to the state return?
