8889 Line 3 Worksheet

I'm covered by medicare but also enrolled in my company health plan so that my wife has medical coverage. I want to check the box in the Line 3 worksheet to 'Family Plan', but the instructions say that if I was covered by medicare, I should check 'None'. Should I check family anyway since my wife is not covered by medicare?

Best regards,

Patrick

Check 'Self' only.  Only your Spouse can have an HSA and HDHP.  You may need the change the SSN on Form 8889 to hers if the HSA contribution came from your W-2 entry in TurboTax, it may have defaulted to your SSN.

We'd love to help you complete your tax return but need more information. Can you please clarify your question?

  • What section are you trying to post? Medical?
  • Are you in TurboTax online, or do you have the CD/Desktop version?

Hello John,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm in TurboTax Deluxe desktop. I'm filing joint with my wife. This issue came up during the Check operation. Turbo Tax stated that 'HDHP coverage check box needs to be checked to indicate the type of coverage held under a high-deductable plan during 2022'. I'm not eligible for an HSA since I'm on Medicare, but my wife is not on Medicare so the HSA is for her. The contribution to fund the HSA comes from my employer off my payroll. The HDHP was in effect before January 2022 and continued the whole year. Where should I put the X in the line 3 workbook for High Deductable Health Insurance. Form 8889 Part 1 Line 3 Smart Worksheet.

Thank you for the update. I had to 'Overide' the filed in order to edit it, but then Turbo Tax is angry at me for overiding it's entry. It wants me to cancel the overide. How do I overide the overide?

You should be able to right-click and choose 'Cancel Override'.  You may pass Review and be able to Efile with 'Self Only' indicated and not need to change the SSN on Form 8889.

Here's more info on Overrides.
