7/2024 I rcvd 100% disability rating from VA but was retroactive to 3/2023. I received partial refund of CA property tax for 2022/23/24/25. Do I just amend my 2023 taxes?

Since property taxes are paid April and December of each year, I believe since my disability rating did not start until March of 2023, that i would not need to amend my 2022 taxes, and i would not have to amend 2024 as those changes were already implemented. I only received 2 checks of partial refund from the County Tax Assessor, which aligns to my theory i stated above. Just trying to see if my thinking process is correct. Hoping anyone can assist.

Do I Need to Amend My Taxes?

2022 Taxes

  • No. Your VA disability rating was retroactive to March 2023, so the exemption does not apply to property taxes paid in 2022. No amendment should be needed.

2023 Taxes

  • Yes. Amend your 2023 tax return to reflect the partial property tax refund you received. Update Schedule A (Itemized Deductions) to show the reduced property tax amount.

2024 Taxes

  • No. If the County Tax Assessor has already applied the exemption for 2024 no amendment is needed.
