I was a resident in one state for 7 months and become a resident in another state the remaining 5 months of 2022. The amount reflected in Box 16 for each state isn't proportinate to the number of months that I was a resident in that given state. What should I do? When entering in the amounts on my Federal return should I enter the amounts that are right on the 1099R or should I just enter the correct proporinate amount so not to mess up that information pulled from my Federal taxes to the state taxes?
You will file part-year resident state tax returns for both states that you lived in last year. Do not modify what is on your W-2 or 1099. When you prepare each states tax return, you will be able to allocate the income for each state. Make sure that you answer the questions in the Personal Info Section correctly regarding the states that you live in to ensure that you prepare accurate state returns. Please note, prepare the state that you moved from first, followed by the state you live in now.
