Zero source of income from NYS

I moved to Chicago from NY on Dec 27, 2021 but my first paycheck which I received in Jan 2022 withheld NYS income taxes because my employer still had my NY address on file.  0% of my income is from NY sources. I am trying to file a nonresident NY return so I can get my withholdings back from NYS but Turbo tax won't let me change the income source from NY to 0.

"It says New York wages were reported on federal form w-2 but no wage income has been allocated  to New York. This will cause  the  efiled return to be rejected by NYS"

Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you

Unfortunately, the W-2 is correct.  Your last pay period ended on December 27th, 2021.  You worked those hours in New York.  Therefore, you do owe the tax to New York.

Fortunately, if you're single and you're not claimed by someone else as a dependent, the standard deduction for NY is $8,000, married is $16,000.

You should:

  • File a NY Non-Resident return.
  • Include the NY income as it shows on your W-2.
  • Take the $8,000/$16,000 deduction, and
  • See what you get back in NY income tax.

Hi -- I'm having the same issue this year. Did you figure out a resolution? Thanks

Please clarify your question.

Will you share your W-2 information?  What is the problem?

  • Do you have an incorrect state?
  • If the Federal or the States income wrong?
  • Did you have taxes paid to an incorrect State?
  • Or is there something else?
