Work in Texas but live in California

I live in California, but work remotely for a Texas company. The W2 has no any state tax withheld. Do I need pay state tax for CA and/or TX?

currently, I don’t see this w2 on my ca tax return. How should I file the tax? I’m using a desktop version.

As a full-year resident of California, ALL your income is taxable by California, regardless of its source.  If your employer does not withhold California taxes for you, then you must make quarterly estimated tax payments to California.

How do I report this W2 in TurboTax?

Enter the W2 in the federal section of TurboTax.  It will carry over to your CA state return.

The fact is that it only carry over my other four W2s, but not the Texas’ one.

See if this works:

In the Personal Info section of TurboTax, be sure you entered California as your State of Residence.

Go back to the federal W2 section and click on Edit your W2.

In the State section of the W2, click on +Add another state.

Add California in Box 15.  In Box 16 on the new California line, enter the amount from Box 1 of your W2 as your California wages/salary.  Then click continue until the section finishes.

When you're done, the amount on Line 12 "State Wages" of your California Form 540 should be the total

amount from Box 16 of each of your W-2's.

TurboTax will pick up all the income of a full-year California resident, as Champ TomD8 says because California states with federal adjusted gross income.

Everything should be on Form 540 line 13.

  1. Tap Forms in the top right corner
  2. In the left column, tap Form 540
  3. Tap Step-by-Step where forms used to be to return to the interview mode

Where are you not seeing your W-2 not being picked up by California?

In the personal info section, when it asked if you earned money in another state, answer NO.

At the w-2 screen, enter the federal EIN number when it asks for a CA EIN # (between boxes 15 & 16).
