If you are receiving a message that your state of California tax return is not eligible to e-file please see this below:

a. Check Availability

Please confirm all forms you are filing are available and supported to be e-filed. When will my forms be ready?(The 8915-E Form is projected to be e-fileable starting 02/24/2021)

b. Remove state and try again
If all your forms are ready and available to be e-filed and you receive this message, please follow the steps below

  1. Sign out of TurboTax.
  2. Sign back in.
  3. E-file the return again.

You may need to remove your state and prepare your state return again to move past the error and successfully e-file.

c. Send us your tax file
Still receiving the message? We'd like to take a deeper look at your specific situation. Please attach screenshots, detailed instructions on where you are in the TurboTax Program and a token number. (This token number gives us your tax file with all your personal information removed)

TurboTax Online:
Click Tax Tools in the menu to the left.
Click Tools, and then
Click Share my file with Agent.
A pop-up message will appear. Click OK to send the sanitized diagnostic copy to us.
Provide the token number that is generated onto this thread.

TurboTax Desktop:
Select Online menu if the customer is using Windows. Select “Help” if using a Mac.
Select Send Tax File to Agent.
A pop-up message will appear, and the customer will select, Send. If using Mac "Send Tax File to TurboTax Agent" Note: Desktop will save a file to your computer unless you uncheck the box.
Another message will appear. Provide the token number that is generated onto this thread

On a related subject, at the end of the TT review of my state tax return, I received the following:

Not Eligible for Electronic Filing (reason shown below):

The return is ineligible for electronic filing.  This return includes disallowed IRA deduction due to CA nonconformity to Federal removal of age restriction of 70 1/2.  The return must be printed and mailed.

My IRA total deduction on Federal was $14,000 - $7K each for myself and my wife.  I am 74 years old, my wife is 64.  Since the CA Form 540 allows for additions/subtractions from Federal amounts, why can't TT just adjust the $14K deduction (i.e., reduce to $7K for my wife, who is NOT age restricted) on the CA return?  Also, why would this minor difference make the entire state return "ineligible" for e-filing?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

This is an old thread, but want to see if an agent can review.
Token: 1080171

Cannot attach image.

Only has 1 single member LLC (a disregarded entity) in the filing, but this is the e-filing error.

"The return is ineligible for electronic filing. This return includes an LLC which is not a disregarded entity. The return must be printed and mailed."

You have 2 Schedule C businesses showing in your returns.  You need to review your business income and expense entries to verify everything is reported in the correct area.  Also, one of your businesses has an invalid business code.  You also have a rental property that you marked was rented all year at a fair market price but have not entered any income for the property.  My suggestion is to start at the beginning of the interview process and verify all your entries and make any corrections before you try to file again.

To do this in TurboTax you can follow these steps:

  1. Within your return, click on My Info in the left menu if you're using TurboTax Online OR click the Personal Info tab near the top of the screen if you are using a TurboTax Desktop version.
  2. Review and verify each screen as you Continue through your returns

This message does not apply to me.  My CA taxes return has been accepted.  I have no business or rental properties.  This totally does NOT pertain to me.  Please correct this problem.

Hi, I'm receiving a notification that "your CA Registered Domestic Partner (RDP) return is ineligible for electronic filing... The good news is you can still print your California return and file it by mail."

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the Registered Domestic Partner schedule RDP is not supported for e-file and the return would need to be printed and mailed in for processing.  To print and mail your return in TurboTax for Windows:

  1. With your return open in TurboTax, select the File tab, then select Continue
  2. On the next screen, E-file Your Federal Return for FREE, select File by mail near the bottom
  3. Continue following the screens until you get to Print Tax Return for Mailing. Select Continue
    • On the next screen, select Print Returns to Mail, then select Preview Print Copy in the pop-up window
  4. Once the preview has opened, select the printer icon near the top (or go to Print in the File menu)
  5. When finished, select Continue in TurboTax and follow any additional onscreen instructions

The first page in your printout is your File by Mail Instructions, which gives you the mailing address to send your return to, along with any forms you need to include with your return.

Thank you so much, @BrittanyS. I'll do this.

As feedback for future versions of the software, it would be helpful to indicate this issue early to customers. I paid additionally for the state tax software and state e-file in this instance and would have used a different filing method.

@BrittanyS, is someone able to reach out to me personally for help? The state return I've printed out through TurboTax has the incorrect box checked under "Filing Status." (Single is marked instead of Married/RDP filing separately.)

You can check the Filing Status entry by following these steps in TurboTax Desktop or online:

  1. Click State Taxes
  2. Click California
  3. Click Edit next to General Information
  4. Verify Information entered

If this does not work and you prefer to speak to an agent you can contact TurboTax by calling 1-800-4INTUIT.

Your Part B (and remove your state) worked for me.

I could not efile my CA form because my CA form did not correctly link to the Fed 1040.  I had to manually enter key data like my name and SSAN.   Calif will not accept manual entries to their form... the key data must flow from the 1040.   So one needs to eliminate and redo CA. Not a big effort:

You need to recreate the link between the Fed 1040 and CA by reloading the state.

1.  To do so, In the Menu Bar,  go to File>>Remove Data>> California.  (note: You may be prompted to take your CA form out of efile status first, and set it up for Mailing (but stop short of the printing for the mailing)).

2. Due to past history with faulty SW, I quit TT, then re-opened the file.

3. I then went back to State Taxes (in EZ Mode) an re-selected CA.   All the key data flowed.  Though on Smart Check some minor boxes needed editing, the key data did not, and I was able to go back and efile the form
