Why isn't South Dakota on the list of states for box 15? Why can't I enter SD?

Several  states do not have a state income tax.  So these states will not show up in certain drop down lists.   Leave boxes 15, 16, and 17 blank when you enter a W-2 for these states.

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming

South Dakota has not State Income Tax.  Just leave this area blank.

TurboTax will not let me E-File with the states and zip codes being left blank.

You have to go back to the form with the error and edit it - the 2 letter state code must be for the correct state and must match the zip code.  Otherwise, you will get an e-file error.     @jrumisek95

If it is a W-2, search for w-2, use the jump to link, find your form from the summary and edit the form.

Check the 2-letter state code for that zip code.   Make sure the city and state match up to the zip code.  This error happens when the state code doesn't match what is on file with the IRS.  TurboTax follows the IRS for acceptable zip codes.  If the state code does not match the correct state, you will get an e-filing error.   Correcting the state code is usually the fix.

South Dakota is SD but it does not have an income tax.  If your state has no state income tax, it is not in the drop down menu of Box 15 of form W-2. Just leave boxes 15-17 Blank, no spaces.

Full Circle "TurboTax will not let me E-File with the states and zip codes being left blank" (1099-INT forms with Wells Fargo for reference).

If you enter your 1099-INT manually, all you have to enter is the Federal ID Number, the Bank Name, and the Interest Amount.

If you imported your 1099-INT, delete it and try entering it yourself.
