You probable have the Washington state Working Families Tax Credit Application in your tax return files.
Click on Forms in the upper right of the desktop program screen. When in Forms mode see if that form is listed on the left side of the screen, should be near or at the bottom. If it is listed then click on it to open. Then click on Delete form at the bottom of the page. Go back to the interview and see if you are still have this issue.
@Necromonkey Thank you for that screen shot. This is not making any sense.
When you are in Forms mode click on the File menu at the top left of the desktop program screen. Is there an option to Remove state return?
If not then your only other option is to contact TurboTax support so this issue can be taken to the developers to get fixed.

No form to delete or state return. I had tried to download the form and see if once it knew I did't qualify, let me file without it and the state isn't even available for download until Feb 6. I am seeing a lot of issues with people trying to file in regards to WA because of the program want a state return filed for a state that doesn't require it.
Your answer does not show a WA STATE TAX so your answer does not work.
PLEASE GET THIS FIXED. Never been a problem for prior years. If a WA form is required to get a credit, then it should be a selection, NOT a mandatory form we have to deal with.
Hi
It was truely frustating
I selected not to file at the very step. I think the new update is allowing it to do so. You can restart turbotax and it should give you options to update it.
None of the replies here fix the probem. I have the desktop version of a return I completed online. When I go to open my file, it forces me to choose a state. Without choosing a state, the file won't load and the proram hangs. When I choose Washington, it says 'forms not available', and then stops responding. Washington has no state tax and I don't need any forms. Please fix this so I can open my file and finish this.
Well I did call TurboTax Support, and got very frustrated as they needed to talk to my husband to confirm they could talk to me. I do all the Turbo taxes for past 10 years by myself, and my husband does not even know how to get into the program. not sure why HE IS the 1st person on my account, when I am the payer and user of the programs for the past 10 years.
Next Turbo tax needs to fix their program for NO INCOME TAX States, so you don't need to do a State return in order to electronically file your Federal Income Taxes. Never happened before this year. Some smart programmer has messed this up so anyone who is in a NO INCOME TAX STATE, can't even file their federal returns.
Oh and lastly, don't swear when you get frustrated (they could not even find me in their accts), so when you talk to TurboTax Support or they will end the call or won't help you even after asking for their supervisor. So now I AM on the "naughty list" at Turbo Tax, ha, ha.
You don't understand. I can't even open the file due to the demand to purchase Washington State Forms. There is no way to select or deselect anything in the program because the file does not load.
Cannot delete WA STATE from turbo tax if you work in WA state. Says can't file Federal tax return until WA State is updated on Feb 6th. Also I called Turbo Tax Support, and they were more worried about who I am, than helping me. After having to get my husband to approve of them talking to me, I got pretty upset and swore a bit because I have been the payer and user of Turbor Tax for over 10 years, yet my recent husband of 6 years had to confirm I could talk to them. This is just Wrong. My email and phone number is on the account, but for some reason my husband's name shows up first probably from our Jt payment Acct, so they need him to confirm. This is just WRONG on so many levels. They stopped the conversation because I swore, so do Senators swear and lose their jobs over their swearing. What about MTG - she swears hourly!
Nice to know it's not me and it's a software glitch. When I try to file my federal taxes, I keep getting the "I know you don't want to hear this, but we can't e-file." "You need to submit your state forms for Washington state." OFFS. I am soooo annoyed. I don't even want to TRY calling them based on the other comments here. I, too, am using the personal/business federal/state software as I have a small amount of California income. NEVER has this ever happened. TT, you need to fix this!
I'm having this problem too. We live in another state (which has a state income tax), and we also own a farm property in Washington state that generates some income for us. We've filed our federal and home state taxes using TurboTax for over 20 years with this same situation, and never had to file a WA state tax form. Nothing is different this year, except that now TT is trying to force us to file a WA state tax form in addition to our home state's form.
Yesterday I completed our federal and (home) state taxes and tried to file electronically, but was stymied by the WA tax form situation. I found this message chain, which at least reassured me that others are facing the same glitch. But none of the proposed solutions in these replies have worked for me.
Today is February 7, and the problem hasn't yet been corrected, although one of the commenters mentioned something about a form that was supposed to be uploaded on February 6. I think I'll wait a few days to see if this gets resolved, but I'll continue to monitor this forum. And if all else fails, when I'm in a calm, rational mood I'll try calling TT support!
Agreed about still a problem on Feb.7. Downloaded and no updates to be found. Stopped the process after transfer from last years information. Wish Intuit would post a comment.
I got a window that gave me an option of "don't file now, I'll do it later" checked that for both WA and CA and my federal went through. Then went back and chose CA only and it worked. Maybe try that?

Simply go to File on your Turbo Tax Desk Top program on the upper left side and then select "Remove State Return". That should give the option to remove Washington State and resolve the isssue.
I hope this works for everybody.
Your suggestion didn't work for me (when I went to "Remove State Return" as you suggested, the only state in the list was my home state - WA wasn't listed there, so I couldn't remove it).
However I think I have found another solution - either that, or coincidentally, TT corrected the issue overnight!
Here's what I did: In Forms view, I opened the "Info Wks" and scrolled down to "Part VII-State Filing Information." The box titled, "Nonresident states" showed "WA." I was able to remove it there. I then saved the file, closed TurboTax, and re-opened - and to my joy, when I went to the section on filing my federal and state return, it only included my home state's return.
Hope everyone who's been frustrated by this glitch will be able to move forward now.
Well, that is good if you don't live in WA.
I moved from NC to WA and I need to claim WA as my residence for part of the year or I would have to claim NC for full year, which I don't want to do.
Hopefully, at the point of e-filing it will give me a choice to not e-file WA as someone else indicated.
Or Intuit fixes the problem.
This doesn't work for me. No state returns populate the window so nothing can be 'removed'
It seems like TurboTax might be prompting you to file a Washington state return due to the Washington Working Families Tax Credit. This credit is new and allows eligible taxpayers to claim it while completing their federal tax return in TurboTax.
You can file directly through the state of Washington here to see if you qualify for the credit. Meanwhile, you can delete the state return by going to the state taxes tab in your program and then use the trash can icon to remove the state return. Also you can go to;
If in Turbo Tax Desktop, you can remove the state return either by:
What worked for me was going to the file section and uncheck the file electronic WA section. I clicked I'll file it later (which I won't).
but I have already downloaded NC tax form into turbo tax and don't want to pay to download the WA tax form,
since I get only 1 free State tax form downloads.
maybe what you say is right but no Washington form will show up until you download it.
or I am missing something,
