Why is line 17 on the Maryland form 502 not filled in ie the standard deduction?

when printing the MD 502 for filing, I noticed that line 17 was blank and the form said it should be filed in.  I am filing standard deduction on my Federal return so as a result I must file the MD return using the standard deduction.  So why does Turbotax not fill in the info and computing taxes on all of adjusted gross income.

If your Maryland Adjusted Gross Income on Line 16 of Form 502 is under the Filing Threshold, Lines 17 through 39 are left blank by TurboTax.  These lines are left blank because if you don't have any taxable income for Maryland purposes, these lines do not affect anything on your return.

The Maryland Filing Thresholds are as follows:

  • Single- $12,000 (Add $1,600 if age 65 or over)
  • Head of Household- $18,000 (Add $1,600 if age 65 or over)
  • Married Filing Joint & Qualifying Widower- $24,000 (Add $1,600 for each spouse age 65 or over)
  • Married Filing Separately- $5

I understand this may be confusing because like you mentioned above, Line 17 says you must select one of the methods.  However, I have used several different tax software programs and they all leave those lines blank if your income is under the filing threshold.  It may have something to do with the e-filing process that requires that they do this.

Rest assured, your Maryland return is still being calculated correctly and the addition of those lines would not change your refund.

when printing the MD 502 for filing, I noticed that line 17 says 4500?  shouldn't it say $24,000 for the standard deduction? MFJ

No, $24,000 is the Standard Deduction for your Federal Return.

No, the maximum amount has changed for Tax Year 2019 on your Maryland return.

According to the instructions for line 16 in the Maryland 2019 State & Local Tax Forms & Instructions,

"The STANDARD DEDUCTION METHOD gives you a standard deduction of 15% of Maryland adjusted gross income (line 16) with minimums of $1,500 and $3,050 and maximums of $2,250 and $4,550, depending on your filing status."

Line 17 Standard deduction not filled in.  My MD gross income is 15,733 the standard deduction for married filing is from the booklet was $3,100.  So I have to pay for MD tax not $0 payment when I file on Form 502

And also add for local tax rate at 0.310 for MD.  502 Form was not correct for MD tax return filing.
