why does my california nonresident return show taxes owed when i have only losses from california sources?

i am a nonresident of california but have a schedule c based in california and a california rental.  Both have negative income for 2022, but my 540NR return shows about $24,000 in california taxable income and over $1,000 owed in california taxes.  Where is turbotax getting these numbers?

If you are using TurboTax CD/Downloads,

  1. Select forms mode from the top right corner.
  2. Select form 540NR from the left panel.
  3. Review the The total Taxable Income Section to check the source of that income.
