Why did I receive an email from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance about registration a few weeks after I filed my TurboTax NY State Returns?

A few weeks after filing my NY State Turbo Tax, I received this email:

"Account Request Expired

Please see the attached link from the New York State Department of Taxation for more information on how they use email to contact you, as well as more information to help you ensure the email was from a legitimate source and not a form of phishing.

It sounds like someone tried to register using your email address.  It could have just been a typo, or something more serious.  If you are a NY taxpayer, it would be a good idea to contact them and re-register yourself (even if you don't need any of their online services) just so no one else can.

Same thing for the IRS, if you don't have an online account with the IRS, it would be a good idea to get one so no one else can register in your name.

This doesn't have anything to do with Turbotax.
