Where do I enter an Overpayment Credit from last year's state return to add to Total Payments and Credits for this year's return?

An overpayment means you overpaid your state income taxes and you'll be receiving a refund. 

 

• If you indicated in 2021 TurboTax to apply your overpayment to next year's taxes, you don't have to do anything. TurboTax will automatically carryforward the amount. 

To enter the amount or see the amount being applied:

1. Open TurboTax. 
2. On the left side menu, select Federal.
3. Scroll down to Deductions & Credits.
4. On the Your tax breaks screen, scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid, then Income Taxes Paid.
5. On the Income Taxes Paid screen, scroll down to 2021 Refund Applied to 2022, then 2021 refund applied to 2022 state taxes. 
6. On the How much of your 2021 state refund did you apply to your 2022 state taxes? screen, enter/verify the state and enter/verify the amount.
7. Continue with the onscreen interview until complete. 

 

 

 

 

 

I am new to TurboTax, so I need to manually enter the amount from last year's tax return and am not seeing how to do that.

To manually navigate and enter the amount in TurboTax:

 

1. Open TurboTax.
2. On the left side menu, select Federal.
3. Scroll down to Deductions & Credits.
4. On the Your tax breaks screen, scroll down to See all tax breaks.
5. Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid, click on Show more, then scroll down to Income Taxes Paid, then select Start or Revisit.
6. On the Income Taxes Paid screen, scroll down to 2021 Refund Applied to 2022, then 2021 refund applied to 2022 state taxes, select Start. 
7. On the How much of your 2021 state refund did you apply to your 2022 state taxes? screen, enter your state (from the drop down menu) and enter the amount. 
8. Select Done and continue with the onscreen interview until complete.

Thanks, that did it!!! I had missed the "See all tax breaks" box. Just to let you know, Francisco helped me online and he was not nearly as fast as your were in knowing how to do that.
