What should I do to get credit for the Obetz Ohio tax withheld?

I live in Massachusetts and worked in Obetz, Ohio. My W2 has Ohio withheld, Ma withheld and Obetz withheld. I filed Fed, Ma and Ohio taxed (2017) and will get refund for Ohio tax. What should I do about the Obetz tax withheld? I used Turbo Premier online. Thanks

You cannot get Ohio City tax refunded. Any Ohio city, with an income tax, is allowed to have withholding taken out of your pay while you worked in that city. Your employer is required to do that withholding. You can't get a refund unless it was improperly withheld, i.e. you didn't actually work there for all or part of the time that your employer was withholding.

Apparently, MA (some state do) does not allow a credit for city taxes paid. Reference: https://www.mass.gov/service-details/learn-about-the-income-tax-paid-to-another-jurisdiction-credit

The answer is very clear and the MA link verified it. I also didn’t actually work there for part of the time that was withheld so I will fill out Ohio local tax form to get partial refund. Thank you very much. I have tried googling for the answer the last few days and got no where. Hal_Al, thank you again for the clear, easy to understand, accurate answer including MA link. Shaun

You may want to contact Columbus City tax dept. (Columbus administers tax for Obetz). https://www.columbus.gov/incometaxdivision/

Some (most) Ohio cities have a special form for the refund situation ("itinerant employee") you describe.

Thanks again Hal_Al, I found the form for Obetz at your link above and I am working on the detail time line as requested. My employer has to certify it (agree and sign) before I mail it in. Look like it will take some time but at least I know what to do now. Shaun
