What documents needs to be attached and mailed with the state tax return?

Hi,

I just finished my CA state tax forms done with TurboTax. Somehow, I can need to print and mail my state tax return. I am confused about what needs to be attached to the state tax return form. The instruction says

"Attach the following to your California tax return:
- a copy of your federal return
- all Form(s) W-2 and W-2G. Also attach any 592-B, 593, and 1099s that have California withholding to the front of your return."

However, TurboTax generates Form 8948 and Form 8889 under the CA state tax filing. Do I also need to print and mail them with my CA state return?

Thanks,

-

Jerron

Yes. Please include Form 8948 and Form 8889 when you mail your California return. Please keep in mind that your return must be postmarked by April 18, 2022 to be timely. Furthermore, if you owe taxes, interest will accrue from the original due date. To avoid penalties and interest, you must pay by your return due date.

Hi Lena,

Thank you!

I also need to file the NY state return. Under the category of "2021 New York Tax Return Attachment", there are also my CA tax return forms. I also need to include the CA tax forms in my NY tax return filing, right?

No, you do not have to include your California return. Per NYS, enclose the following:

  • your check or money order and Form IT-201-V if you owe tax and are not paying by another option
  • your original signed return
  • other forms, including Form IT-196, Form IT-201-ATT, Form IT-225, Form IT-227, and Form IT-558
  • any correspondence and computation sheets of paper
  • Form IT-2 (and Forms IT-1099-R, 1099-G, and W-2G, if applicable) – do not send federal Form W-2 or 1099-R
