West Va. requires form SCTC-1 to be filed with the return but why is TT not doing that ?

The Senior Citizen’s Tax Credit is available to those homeowners who:

• Participate in the Homestead Exemption program (contact your county assessor’s office for more information),
• Have paid their property tax, and
• Have income that is less than 150% of federal poverty guidelines (based on the number of people in the household). See chart here.  

If you believe you are eligible for any credit, you must file a West Virginia state income tax return, including the Schedule SCTC‐1.   

 

In January senior citizens who receive the homestead exemption will receive a packet of information about claiming the refund along with form SCTC-1.   When you get to your state return in TurboTax, you will come to a question that asks ''Did you receive a letter from the state tax department?''   Answer YES.  

 

The amount of allowable credit is already determined and is found in Box 2 of form SCTC-1 which is part of the information packet.  

TT tell you to send your WV taxes to one address but the SCTC-1 requires you to send your taxes and SCTC-1 form to a different place. I sent signed copies to both locations.

According to the West Virginia (WV) instructions the form can be filed by using either mail or e-file. If it is mailed the instructions show the same address to mail the forms together.

• If you believe you are eligible for any credit, you must file a West Virginia Personal Income Tax Return, including the Schedule SCTC‐1. Returns can be filed electronically or on paper.

If the return is mailed here are the instructions for mailing the WV IT-140 and Form SCTC-1:

• Sign and date your return and mail both pages of Form IT-140 AND Form SCTC-1 to the address for “Refund” shown beneath the signature lines of Form IT-140.
