I live in Michigan and won on line gambling. the w2g payer is listed as New Jersey. But I live in MI. Box 13 has state payer id that matches payers federal id. Box 14 is blank. Don't I have to pay state taxes on these winnings in MI or do I have to file a NJ return because the online casino appears to be located in NJ. Some of the winnings I had to go to local casino to cash out.
Yes, you have to pay Michigan tax on your gambling winnings, since you are a Michigan resident. You do not have to pay New Jersey tax or file a New Jersey tax return. It doesn't matter where the payer is located.
If there is no state income tax withheld in box 15 of the W-2G, leave boxes 13, 14, and 15 blank in TurboTax.
So I should not enter the payer ID that is in Box 13? It is the same as Payers Federal only box 13 has MI/ infront of thenumber. Nothing in box 14 or 15.
Yes, that's correct. If boxes 14 and 15 are blank, you can leave Box 13 blank as well.
As @rjs said, unless you were physically in NJ when you won this money, no NJ tax return is required.
